For a plumbing emergency in Advance, close the main valve or turn off the well pump breaker first, and leave the house before calling 911 or Piedmont Natural Gas if you smell gas. When it's safe, call the number on this page to be connected with a local plumber in Advance.

Signs it's an emergency
- A pipe or fitting that's spraying, gushing or dripping fast
- Toilets and drains backing up together on the lowest floor
- Water coming from the bottom of the water heater
- Soft, wet flooring near a bathroom or the laundry hookup
- No water anywhere in the house
- A rotten-egg smell indoors (leave first)
Advance's setup, address by address
Advance is an unincorporated community in eastern Davie County, along the Yadkin River and the NC 801 corridor, taking in places such as Farmington, Fork Church and Hillsdale. Where county lines reach, water comes from Davie County Public Utilities, drawn from the Yadkin and South Yadkin rivers. Davie County says the meter usually sits in the front yard near the road, in the utility right-of-way, but it doesn't publish where its responsibility ends, so call the county about a leak at the meter box.
Sewer varies too. Some addresses are on county sewer and others are not on municipal sewer and use a private onsite wastewater system. If you don't know which you have, your bill or closing papers usually say. Homes not on county water draw from a private well, and a dead pump is the usual cause of dry taps.
The county's water system had 280 leaks on its own lines in fiscal 2022-23, so if a neighbor has the same problem, phone the county before a plumber.
Most of the housing is fairly new, with a median build year of 2001, but about 29% predates 1980. In the newer homes, plastic supply lines, washer hoses and first-generation water heaters are the usual failures.
What affects the cost
- Whether the call comes after hours or on a weekend
- Where the failure is: crawl space, finished wall, or the buried line to the road
- Well equipment, if the pump, pressure switch or tank is at fault
- Permit steps through Davie County Planning & Development Services if the fix turns into a replacement
What to expect on the call
You'll be connected with an independent plumber who serves Advance. Explain the symptom, whether you're on county water or a well, and whether the water is off. Ask what the after-hours charge is. Arrival depends on the hour and workload, so no time is promised.
