About Rural Hall
Rural Hall is a small railroad-era town in northern Forsyth County. A sanitary district provided water and sewer here starting in 1935, decades before the town incorporated in 1974. Today in-town water comes from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities, which runs the Rural Hall water tank on Norman Drive. The tank was taken out of service October 5-8, 2026 for maintenance, and the city warned of pressure swings and discolored water along University Parkway, US 52, NC 66, NC 65 and Stanleyville Drive. That's a reminder to check for notices before assuming the problem is in your house.
About half of Rural Hall's homes were built before 1980, with a median year of 1980. The town's area plan says designated rural parts of the planning area aren't expected ever to receive public sewer, so homes there use private onsite wastewater systems.
What to do now
- Gas smell? Leave without using switches and call 911 or Piedmont Natural Gas at 800-752-7504 from outside. About 15% of homes in ZIP 27045 heat with utility gas.
- Close the main. In older houses the valve may be stiff; turn it slowly and don't force it.
- Turn off the water heater at the breaker or gas valve.
- Open a low faucet to relieve pressure and drain the pipes.
- Look for utility notices or ask a neighbor if pressure or color has changed on their side too.
- Stay out of standing water near outlets or appliances until the power is off.
